Just in time for Bike to Work Day
Five Communities Earn BFC Status
Cities from Austin, Texas to LaCrosse, Wis. Recognized for BicyCle Friendliness
Washington, DC - Five cities across the United States can celebrate Bike to Work Week with the news that the League of American Bicyclists has awarded them the coveted designation of "Bicycle Friendly Community." The award, given at levels from Bronze to Platinum, recognizes those communities that are improving conditions for bicyclists and bicycling.
Five cities are awarded the BFC designation for the first time:
Silver
Austin, Texas San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Bronze
LaCrosse, Wis. Park City, Utah Salt Lake City, Utah
Fifteen communities successfully renewed their designation.
Gold
Corvallis, Ore.
Silver
Fort Collins, Colo. Scottsdale, Ariz.
Bronze
Ada County Highway District, Idaho Ann Arbor, Mich. Beaverton, Ore. Bend, Ore. Burlington, Vt. Cary, N.C. Chico, Calif. Denver, Colo. Mesa, Ariz. Redmond, Wash. Schaumburg, Ill. Shawnee, Kan.
"We salute these communities for their tremendous commitment to improving conditions for bicyclists," said Andy Clarke, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. "They are making the streets safer for bicycling, educating bicyclists and motorists to share the road, promoting a wide range of bicycling activities and even stepping up the enforcement of traffic laws to protect bicyclists."
Notable features of this round of applications include:
Austin, Texas recently updated their 1998 bicycle plan, and included $2 million in bicycle-specific funding. The city offers weekly Road I courses, has a maintenance hotline, and promotes bicycling year round.
San Luis Obispo, Calif. has a strong cycling culture and recently created a safe and fast route into downtown from the south side of town, allowing cyclists to avoid a high-volume, narrow right-of-way arterial.
LaCrosse, Wis. has a strong education program. All schools have extracurricular activities centered around cycling, and the school district provides bicycles and helmets for use at elementary schools.
Park City, Utah is a great town for mountain bicyclists, and understands the importance of connectivity in the bike network. The community also has a Complete Streets policy that will be implemented starting this year.
Salt Lake City, Utah has a great bicycle culture and a strong Complete Streets policy that was initiated by the mayor in January 2007. With improvements planned for its cycling infrastructure and great in-town mountain biking, this city has a lot to offer cyclists.
About the BFC Program & the League
The BFC program was initiated in 2003 and has received applications from more than 170 communities. Designations have been awarded to 63 cities and counties. Applicants complete a detailed on-line form with numerous questions in five key areas: engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation/planning. Spiro

Chatted with some mountain bikers on Saturday evening. These trails are really getting dry.
Spiro is clear to the top and there are still a few snow patches on Mid Mountain but with these record setting temperatures and brilliant sunshine it won't be long til it is open all the way through.

High Fives to Sophie Frankenburg who has organized the Ecker Hill Bike to School Day. Sophie has over 100 kids and a bunch of parents to Ride to School on Friday May 18. The Kids will have three locations to gather to join the Bike to School Train accompanied by parents and escorted by Park City Police and Summit County Sheriff Departments

Kids will meet at The Yarrow, Willow Creek Park and Basin Rec Field House and then across 224 to Kilby Road

My first response!! Great 5K event on Sat despite the weather. Our town is really connected. We had a wonderful turnout for the Colby School Cinco de Mayo 5K as well as the Young Riders / White Pine bike swap and even the hazmat dropoff at The Canyons!! Gotta Love This Place

Cinco de Mayo 5k
The less than perfect weather conditions did nothing to diminish the spirits of the Cinco de Mayo 5k and the joyful exuberance of the 265 partipants at The Colby School.

Age groups were filled with happy runners and walkers as participants slogged through the extremely beautiful and well maintained McLeod Creek Trail.

Winners Michael Barrile (20:39) and Kelly Milligan 20:53.4 led the pack and despite the snow and cool temps the rest of the field was almost all smiles as they crossed the finish line at The lovely Colby School. Cheerful volunteers from The Colby School and Mountain Trails Foundation were greatly appreciated as were sponsors The Colby School, Zions Resort Bank, JANS and White Pine Touring, Alpine Signs, Clif Bars and Utah Beer .
It was a sea of sombreros at the finish line which helped keep the snow out of eyes!

Though it was another snow incident during Tour des Suds, Andrew did get to spend two days with local riders and this article is the results of the visit.

Here comes spring....again

Yes, we are back into late winter conditions but looks as if this system is heading out and we should be back on the trails very soon.

Park City Municipal, Basin Recreation and Mountain Trails are all working together to create an alternative trail in Round Valley. The trail is indeed on private property and there are three more private lots adjacent and even more private lots above. Watch for some trail building activity over there.

WOW! What a glorious day here in Park City...temps in the 70s and more of that beautiful Utah Sunshine
Trails are really drying out fast. All the hardsurface trails are in fine shape and very busy
Next level trail ie Lost Prospector, Glenwild, and Round Valley are almost dry
Still snow on the north facing and higher trails....
