Geocaching 101 and Geocaching Trail Ride

Park City's Mountain Trails Foundation is offering outdoor enthusiasts an opportunity to learn more about one of the fastest growing outdoor hobbies, Geocaching. Mountain Trails will host a free introductory clinic on Wednesday, Aug. 1 plus a Geocaching trail ride on Saturday, Aug. 4.

Geocaching is a modern day treasure hunt utilizing a GPS receiver plus subtle hints to find hidden 'caches' at interesting outdoor locations. Park City is a hotbed for hidden caches, with dozens located along Mountain Trails' several hundred miles of bike and hiking trails in Park City.

Mountain Trails' clinics will be conducted by local Geocaching experts Tom Kelly and Carole Duh (Tumbleweed and Cactus) with nearly 400 caches found.

"Geocaching has really enhanced our travel and especially our outdoor recreation by taking us to interesting places we would never have known," said Kelly. "And for newcomers to the hobby there's no better place to begin than the trails around Park City."

The introductory clinic will be 7:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 at the Park City Miner's Hospital. The mountain bike trail ride will meet at the Starbucks at Kimball's Junction and run from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 utilizing only the flat trails in the valley, so it's perfect for any level rider.

The Wednesday clinic will include a short introduction to Geocaching and use of a GPS receiver. The trail ride will be a hands-on opportunity to find actual caches along the Park City trails. The introductory clinic is not required and enthusiasts are welcome to attend either or both of the free clinics.

Participants are encouraged to spend some time at www.geocaching.com to learn more and to register for a free Geocaching login. It's also recommended you have a GPS receiver. And a mountain bike or cruiser bike is required for the trail ride. The Geocaching trail ride will be designed for beginning riders.

"GPS receivers are really handy for outdoor trail riding or hiking," said Kelly. "For newcomers, I recommend Garmin's eTrex line, especially the new Garmin eTrex Legend Cx. Magellan's Explorist line is also very good." GPS receivers are readily available at outdoor stores, including REI in Salt Lake City which offers the best line and expertise.

More introductory information on Geocaching is available at www.tumbleweedandcactus.com. No advance registration is required for the free clinics.

Kudos to all!

"Carol,

I am continually amazed by the courtesy and etiquette demonstrated by other riders and hikers on our mountain trails. It has been better the last couple of years. Is it seasoned riders? Is it just contagious? Don't see many equestrians. It would be nice to provide some positive reinforcement for these folks.

Mike "

Trails are in great condition but it is really, really hot out there so don't forget to take plenty of water, sunscreen and your trail manners.

Mid Mountain Trail is open but there is still some deadfall. Crews are heading up there next week.
Colin's Trail is reported to be in the best shape ever!

Also we have a report of Lower Holly Flanders last weekend from Ambush and said there are 2 large pine trees down across the trail at the bridge that Mountain Trails built over the gully 2 years ago...if you happen to be up there and remove these trees ....let us know

Also if you have any trail reports, please comment or send us an email.

League of American Bicylist Press Release
Just in time for Bike to Work Day
Five Communities Earn BFC Status
Cities from Austin, Texas to LaCrosse, Wis. Recognized for BicyCle Friendliness
Washington, DC - Five cities across the United States can celebrate Bike to Work Week with the news that the League of American Bicyclists has awarded them the coveted designation of "Bicycle Friendly Community." The award, given at levels from Bronze to Platinum, recognizes those communities that are improving conditions for bicyclists and bicycling.
Five cities are awarded the BFC designation for the first time:
Silver
Austin, Texas San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Bronze
LaCrosse, Wis. Park City, Utah Salt Lake City, Utah
Fifteen communities successfully renewed their designation.
Gold
Corvallis, Ore.
Silver
Fort Collins, Colo. Scottsdale, Ariz.
Bronze
Ada County Highway District, Idaho Ann Arbor, Mich. Beaverton, Ore. Bend, Ore. Burlington, Vt. Cary, N.C. Chico, Calif. Denver, Colo. Mesa, Ariz. Redmond, Wash. Schaumburg, Ill. Shawnee, Kan.
"We salute these communities for their tremendous commitment to improving conditions for bicyclists," said Andy Clarke, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. "They are making the streets safer for bicycling, educating bicyclists and motorists to share the road, promoting a wide range of bicycling activities and even stepping up the enforcement of traffic laws to protect bicyclists."
Notable features of this round of applications include:
Austin, Texas recently updated their 1998 bicycle plan, and included $2 million in bicycle-specific funding. The city offers weekly Road I courses, has a maintenance hotline, and promotes bicycling year round.
San Luis Obispo, Calif. has a strong cycling culture and recently created a safe and fast route into downtown from the south side of town, allowing cyclists to avoid a high-volume, narrow right-of-way arterial.
LaCrosse, Wis. has a strong education program. All schools have extracurricular activities centered around cycling, and the school district provides bicycles and helmets for use at elementary schools.
Park City, Utah is a great town for mountain bicyclists, and understands the importance of connectivity in the bike network. The community also has a Complete Streets policy that will be implemented starting this year.
Salt Lake City, Utah has a great bicycle culture and a strong Complete Streets policy that was initiated by the mayor in January 2007. With improvements planned for its cycling infrastructure and great in-town mountain biking, this city has a lot to offer cyclists.
About the BFC Program & the League
The BFC program was initiated in 2003 and has received applications from more than 170 communities. Designations have been awarded to 63 cities and counties. Applicants complete a detailed on-line form with numerous questions in five key areas: engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation/planning. Local cyclists, national experts, and League staff review the applications. To learn more, visit www.bicyclefriendlycommunity.org. The League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation, and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. The League represents the interests of 57 million American cyclists, including its 300,000 members and affiliates. For more information or to support the League, visit www.bikeleague.org or www.bicyclefriendlycommunity.org

The less than perfect weather conditions did nothing to diminish the spirits of the Cinco de Mayo 5k and the joyful exuberance of the 265 partipants at The Colby School.

Age groups were filled with happy runners and walkers as participants slogged through the extremely beautiful and well maintained McLeod Creek Trail.

Winners Michael Barrile (20:39) and Kelly Milligan 20:53.4 led the pack and despite the snow and cool temps the rest of the field was almost all smiles as they crossed the finish line at The lovely Colby School. Cheerful volunteers from The Colby School and Mountain Trails Foundation were greatly appreciated as were sponsors The Colby School, Zions Resort Bank, JANS and White Pine Touring, Alpine Signs, Clif Bars and Utah Beer .
It was a sea of sombreros at the finish line which helped keep the snow out of eyes!

Here comes spring....again

Yes, we are back into late winter conditions but looks as if this system is heading out and we should be back on the trails very soon.

Park City Municipal, Basin Recreation and Mountain Trails are all working together to create an alternative trail in Round Valley. The trail is indeed on private property and there are three more private lots adjacent and even more private lots above. Watch for some trail building activity over there.

Summery temps

WOW! What a glorious day here in Park City...temps in the 70s and more of that beautiful Utah Sunshine
Trails are really drying out fast. All the hardsurface trails are in fine shape and very busy
Next level trail ie Lost Prospector, Glenwild, and Round Valley are almost dry
Still snow on the north facing and higher trails....

Monday, April 23, 2007

Well, it is truly mud season here in Park City. Trails are soggy after Sunday's rain, snow, hail afternoon. However, it looks like this weather will soon be outta here and we will return to early season trail conditions.

Plan for 3rd lane scares cyclists
But another lane on S.R. 224 could cut congestion
Patrick Parkinson, Of the Record staff
Reducing traffic congestion at Kimball Junction might make bicycling in the area too dangerous, trail advocates say.
"We did a really good job with these very wide shoulders and they're very used by the bicycle community and we would hate to have a chunk of that taken out," Mountain Trails Foundation chief Carol Potter said. "I want to make sure that, for these bicyclists, what we've got we keep."
At issue is whether striping three lanes instead of two on each side on State Road 224 from Cutter Lane to Interstate 80 would cut rush-hour gridlock.
"It's not the perfect solution," Summit County Engineer Derrick Radke said. "Any kind of bike traffic would have to be traveling in the same lane (as cars)."
County officials planning to widen the highway hoped transportation money earmarked this year by the state would help fund the improvements.
"[The state] basically told us that most of those monies are earmarked for other projects," Radke said.
But a third lane could be added to S.R. 224 when the road is resurfaced this summer, he said.
"I don't see it as a big deal," Radke said.
Still, the plan puts bicyclists at Kimball Junction at risk, Summit County Commissioner Bob Richer said.
"There will be no shoulder for bike traffic whatsoever," he said. "I'm just very concerned about eliminating bicycle traffic from that area."
Commuters have a difficult enough time cycling from Snyderville to Park City, Parkite Todd Henneman said.
"Instead of making room for more cars, how about have a nice lane so people can use alternative transportation," Henneman said. "How about other ways to unlock the gridlock by not putting more cars on the road? It's almost a no-brainer."
The road shoulder provides cyclists "enough room there that we can actually feel somewhat comfortable not being so close to traffic," he explained.
"If people feel a little more safe about using their bike to ride in from the junction, they might be more inclined to do it," Henneman said. "I ride that road enough to know that I don't want the shoulder to go away."
To accommodate growth, traffic studies in western Summit County show nearly $100 million in road improvements could be necessary within 25 years. The plan includes widening S.R. 224.
When they meet Wednesday commissioners could decide whether to eliminate the road shoulders.
"It sure is appealing because it really would help us move more cars faster," County Commissioner Sally Elliott said. "I'd love to hear from the bicycle community."
According to Radke, "in order to get this done, we've got to act fairly soon."
Act Now!!! It is important that comment and show a unified voice for the cyclist community
The Shoulder on 224 is the best thing we have going.
Eliminating this shoulder is a step backwards.
Encourage the commission not to seek this early funding. This will leave the shoulder as it is.
Studies show that adding lanes increases vehicular trafiic.
We support more Active Transportation.
One less car is exactly what we are looking for..

It's snow nice to have winter back again!! I track-packed & groomed from Bonanza to the Dump Road late yesterday afternoon. With close to a foot of the white stuff on on the trail, the coverage is excellent and the conditions are what they should be in late February. It looks like the strong winds cleared most of the snow from the dump road to 248 however and it was too thin to groom.

Silver Ski 2007

We are so hoping for snow for the Saturday Silver Ski 2007 because the connecting trails are a bit thin. However, there is still lots of groomed snow at Willow Creek Park and as always we are going to have our event. No Matter What! If we can have Tour des Suds in a blizzard in September we can have our Silver Ski 2007 event in February!

So join us at Willow Creek Park from 12:30-2:30 on Saturday September 10 at Willow Creek Park for lots of outdoor fun. Broom Ball, Cross Country Clinics and demos by Rossignol, very cool Swix Silver Ski caps and lots of other schwag.

We'll be there with hot chocolate, cookies and marshmallows to roast over Bill Brown's Olympic Cauldron. This is all a part of Park City Winterfest so bring the kids, bring the grannies and celebrate our Olympic Legacy!
Thanks to our presenting partners: Basin Recreation and Park City Municipal

Breaking News! Venue Change

We are delighted to announce this change of venue!

You're invited to head over the Rail Trail on Saturday February 3 and join the fun.

The 2007 Park City Winterfest Celebration kicks off Saturday, February 3, with the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race.

Mushers from around the world are racing to Park City from Jackson, Wyoming, and the final stage of the race will take place in Park City along the Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail from noon to 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 3.

The Race Start Area located near the Rail Trail Head in Parking Lot G at 1801 Prospector Avenue will be filled with mushers, their sleds, and over 450 dogs eager to run.

The atmosphere will be festive with live music, merchandise for sale, information booths, and give-aways, too! The race starts at noon so get there early for a chance to meet the mushers and their dogs. A Junior Musher Race with students from various middle and high schools in Wyoming and Utah (including students from Park City’s Ecker Hill Middle School) will follow from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Parking is free and plentiful so pack a lunch, bring some sunglasses, and enjoy a unique opportunity to see sled dog racing in your own backyard.

See you there! This race ends at the Promontory Trail Head so there are lots of locations to set out your lawn chair and watch the fun!

BikeDance

"Don't let the lack of snow get you down. With the recent high pressure, the winter riding conditions are absolutely epic!!! Round Valley, Lost Prospector and Blackhawk are all rideable. Just lower your tire pressure about 20% and bundle up, especially the toes, fingers and head. You need to focus a little more about staying on the trail, because you tend to sink off trail and start with a climb to warm up. Tubeless tires, disc brakes and a full suspension are nice, but tubed tires, v-brakes and a hard tail work too. If the snow doesn't warm up too much, the afternoon is the best time. The best part, you don't have to wash the mud off your bike when your done!!!"

Thanks Bo for the report..

Klunkerz and Round Valley riding

Went to the X-Dance Klunkerz movie last night and it was standing room only.

While waiting for the doors to open I talked with local riders Chris Peters and Doug Dalton and they were raving about the riding in Round Valley.

Since the lack of snow in Park City has made the trails pretty darn good.

They were saying that it is almost better than summer riding because there's no dust and your tires are clean after the ride.

Winter Trails

Well, after the MLK Holiday we are looking forward to several fun things.

First would be warming temperatures! Yikes, it's cold out there

Second, Our new snowmobile should be here by the end of the week and we are looking forward to grooming the Rail Trail with this new piece of equipment. It is a four stroke Ski Doo...very green!

Third, we hope to soon be able to groom from the Rail Trail, under Highway 248 and onto Quinn's Recreation and Ice Arena. That will be so cool. You can drop the kids off at the rink and you can ski to the Rail Trail. We are working with Park City Municipal on this expansion of our Winter Trails network....Yay!

Saturday Night, at 11:00pm please watch KUTV Channel 2. Reese Stein will be featuring our Winter Trails Snowshoe event on Spiro.

Be sure to go to Mountain Trails, sign up for our new e-newsletter and give a donation through PayPal and become a member of Mountain Trails.

Cheers from chilly Park City!

Walkable/Bikable/ Sundance and Gary Fisher

We have a lot of fun coming up this week. First,an important meeting on "Walkable Bikeable Park City". This will be another step in the walkable plan. Landmark Design will be presenting the results of their phone survey and community meetings.

"Walking meeting planned"
Park Record Saturday January 13

Park City officials on Tuesday plan another in a series of open houses about walking and bicycling routes in the city.
The meeting is scheduled from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. The government plans to review the early findings of an ongoing study and says a preliminary list of projects will be presented.
The city in 2006 started a wide-ranging discussion about how to make Park City easier to navigate for people not driving cars and the upcoming meeting continues those efforts.
The meeting will follow a set of earlier gatherings, held in late 2006, when Parkites told officials and City Hall's consultants what routes they see as safe or unsafe.
For more information, call City Hall at 615-5001.

Here is the Landmark Design webpage with tons of information

Sundance begins Friday and new this year is "WalkDance". Mountain Trails, Park City Municipal and Sundance have partnered to create walking routes throughout Park City for the Festival. It became apparent to our Share the Road Alt Trans group last year that it was easier to walk to the different venues than using your car (definitely about impossible), or taking the bus. This year the Sundance program includes the walking routes on their map, there will be confidence marking signs with distance in minutes and Sundance volunteers will be well- educated in suggesting how easy it is to walk. Sincere thanks to Park City Municipal and Sundance for acting on this suggestion and bringing it to reality. Signs will be posted this week. We hope this will lead to more walkable routes within Park City and dove tail with the above Park City Walkable/Bikeable study

Slamdance
Gary Fisher comes to SlamDance and Park City

Klunkerz
Directed by Billy Savage A film by Pumelo Pictures
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a group of hippie/athletes from the San Francisco Bay Area took their cycling adventures off-road and turned a hundred year-old industry upside down. Their bikes, scavenged from dumpsters and junkyards, were affectionately known as Klunkerz. It was from these humble beginnings that a multi-billion dollar industry, a new form of recreation for the masses, and an Olympic sport were born.
